Stephen Ray Mayberry, 80, passed away on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at Park Place Long Term Care in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, after a short illness.
Stephen was born to Denzel and Louise (Walker) Mayberry in Peoria, Illinois, on September 24, 1945. Uncle Steve overcame many obstacles throughout his life. Despite physical challenges and pain, he worked for nearly 30 years in the kitchen at the Country Club of Peoria until his health forced him to retire in 2000.
Uncle Steve was a pure soul and a proud native of Peoria. He attended Peoria Public Schools. He loved watching wrestling and western movies, listening to Elvis, reading the Peoria Journal Star, and anything involving trains. When he was no longer able to drive, he mastered the Peoria Public Transit system and was a frequent patron. He was also incredibly proud of his apartment at Galena Park Terrace in Peoria.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Danny Mayberry Sr.; his sister in law, Nadine (Hopkins) Mayberry; and his great-niece, Jennifer Lynn Dyar.
He is survived by his nephew, Danny (Melissaty) Mayberry Jr.; his niece, Monica (Thomas) Dyar; three great-nephews; three great-nieces; one great-great-nephew; and multiple cousins who advocated for him after his mother passed and his health declined.
Our entire family wishes to express our deepest gratitude to the incredible staff at Park Place and Every Step Hospice.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. The Olson-Yoder Funeral Home is caring for Stephen and his family.
